STAYC (which stands for “Star to a Young Culture”) is a Korean girl group formed and debuted by High Up Entertainment. The group inlcudes Sumin, Sieun, Isa, Seeun, Yoon, and J. On November 12th 2020, STAYC released their debut single album, “Star to a Young Culture.”
Vocalist Sieun was well-known defore debuting in STAYC due to her variety of roles in top rated K-Dramas and for being the daughter of popular veteran Korean singer Park Nam-jung.
Park Nam-jung, who debuted in 1988, is credited with creating the L-Dance craze in 1980s. During his career, Park Nam-jung released several chart-topping hits including, “Missing you,” “Emergency of Love,” and “Oh Wind.”
In 2018, Park Sieun won the Youth Acting Award in 2018 SBS Drama Awards for her role in Still 17. Other K-Dramas that Sieun acted in include The Good Wife, Queen for Seven Days, and The Crowned Clown.
Before their debut, STAYC was promoted by the name, “High Up Girls.” It was under this name that the STAYC Members, along with trainees Chan Chien-chien (Lydia) and Kim Min-jung starred in a YouTube Original documentary series. The doscuseries, titled “K-Pop Evolution” followed the eight trainees during the last months before the debut.
On September 8th, 2020, High Up Entertainment introduced fans to Sieun as the first confirmed member of STAYC.
During October, Isa, J, and Yoon were revealed through individual profile videos. Also in October, High Up Entertainment announced that the group’s first record, a Teen-Fresh single album titled, “Star To A Young Culture” will be produced by respected K-Pop producer-duo Black Eyed Pilsung.
Black Eyed Pilsung is known for creating K-Pop classics like TWICE’s “TT,” Apink’s “Dumhdurum,” and SISTER’S “Touch My Body,” among others.
Before making their debut in November, the members of STAYC released a variety of dance and vocal covers on 1theK’s YouTube channel. Together these covers gained over 3 million views by new fans.
STAYC’s debut song “So Bad” was released on the 12th of November, 2020. The catchy pop song showcased the members versatile skills as vocalists, dancers, and rappers, as well as the group’s unique sound that they have when the members perform together.
“So Bad” received over 2.6 million views in the first 24 hours, an incredible amount for a debut song from a group from a lesser-known Entertainment company.
STAYC also had the best selling debut album for a girl group in 2020, selling over 4.3k copies of their single album on the first day and over 10k copies in the first week.
After the huge success of their first single, STAYC returned with even more force for their next comeback. The group’s second release, titled “ASAP,” quickly became a viral hit in and outside of Korea. The music video reached 20 million views in just over a week and the album, titled “STAYDOM,” sold over 55k copies in its first month, making it some of the top selling songs of 2021.
For their third comeback, the six members of STAYC released with first EP and its title track “Stereotype.” The song won the group their first music show win on “The Show.” Stereotype proved that STAYC are definitely not one hit wonders and are able to hold onto the success of “ASAP.”
On the 23rd of February 2022, STAYC released their second EP titled “YOUNG-LUV.COM,” along with the group’s brand new title track “RUN2U.”
With their incredibly catch melodies, addictive dances, and bubbly personalities, STACY has become one of the leading groups in the 4th generation K-Pop girl group revolution.
