STAYC is the Spotify EQUAL Artist Of The Month: Promoting Female Music Artists and Gender Equality in Music

As of October 29th, STAYC is officially joining the list of brilliant women who have been Spotify’s EQUAL Artist Of The Month. The 2020-debut girl group is the first Korean and K-Pop to be the Spotify EQUAL AOTM.

  • In an interview with Spotify’s “For The Record,” the girls spoke about some of their biggest female inspirations and gender equality in the music industry.
  • The girls stated that by practicing the music of female artists like Doja Cat, Little Mix, and Bebe Rexha, they discovered their style as a group, which the members describe as “teenfresh.”
  • The members wrap up the interview by citing BeyoncĂ©’s “Run the World (Girls)” as the group’s girl-power anthem.

The Spotify EQUAL campaign

The EQUAL campaign was started by Spotify in celebration of International Women’s Day 2021.

“Currently, only one in five artists on the charts is a woman, according to the Spotify-funded USC Annenberg study on representation of women in the music industry. This knowledge has helped fuel our commitment to extending our resources and generating more impactful opportunities for women artists.”

The campaign has focused on promoting and showcasing the stunning female artists of the music industry. Since the start of the EQUAL program, EQUAL playlists have been heard for over 6 Million hours and have over 120 Million artist streams.

  • Artists featured in the campaign have seen massive growth, such as Polish artist LUNA who experienced 1000% more discoveries.

Overall, the EQUAL campaign has been a hugely positive step for gender equality within the music industry.
