Queendom Line-Up Breakdown, &AUDITION, NCT Hollywood, I-LAND: Upcoming K-Pop Survival Shows of 2022

The last few years have brought K-Pop hugely successful and entertaining survival programs that have created some of the top rookie groups in the genre. From 2021’s Girls Planet 999 to the star-studded I-LAND and Queendom, fans have made the shows incredibly famous in the international music industry.

K-Pop Goes Hollywood

In May of 2021, MGM’s chairman Mark Bernett and head of SM Entertainment Lee Soo-man co-announced their brand new survival show to get aired in 2022. Titled “K-Pop Goes Hollywood,” the upcoming program will search for American artists to join SM Entertainment’s anticipated NCT sub-unit “NCT Hollywood.”

NCT is a pre-established group composed of several sub-units and 23 members. The group debuted in 2016 and has, since then, gained millions of fans and listeners around the globe as their popularity has grown, become of the most successful groups in K-Pop history. This planned program will look for American artists who have what it takes to join the new newest NCT sub-unit and perform on the world’s stage.

According to the two companies, K-Pop Goes Hollywood will include 21 contestants between 13 and 25. The 21 future stars will get tested on their singing, rapping, and dancing ability and will get judged and mentored by the Lee Soo-man and the other NCT members. Once the members are selected, the future NCT members will get flown to Seoul, South Korea, for a once-in-a-lifetime K-Pop Bootcamp at SM Entertainment.

With NCT already including a China-based sub-unit and many foreign members hailing from different counties around the globe, this one-of-a-kind unit strangely suits this already unique K-Pop group. 

Since last year, fan anticipation for the upcoming survival program has reached a fever pitch as NCT fans, collectively referred to as NCTzens, continue to wait for the show to premiere.

HYBE Japan Global Debut Project – &AUDITION

The next survival program that has fans excited is also taking place abroad- in Japan. Produced by HYBE LABELS’ Japan branch, the upcoming program titled “&AUDITION,” will be part of the label’s “Global Debut Project,” and is scheduled to be released sometime in 2022

Including four former I-LAND contestants, K, Nicholas, EJ, and Taki, the upcoming program will include multi-talented future J-Pop idols. The talented contestants will get mentored by some of the top names in the Korean and Japanese music industries.

The expert mentors include HYBE Corp. Chairman and music producer Bang Si-hyuk, star producer Pdogg, and performance director Song Sung-Deuk. Other Mentors include icons of the Japanese music world like Sakura Inoue, Soma Genda, Ryosuke Imai, and UTA.

HYBE LABELS JAPAN is currently open for auditions. Audition requirements state that applicants must be born after 2000, can be male or female, and can apply in five categories: vocals, rap, dance, acting, and modeling.

I-LAND 2 To Search For New Girl Group

2020 saw the airing of one of K-Pop’s most long-term successful survival competitions in history. A partnership between the Korean music channel and Television producer MNET and HYBE’s Belift Labs, the program, titled “I-LAND,” produced the hit seven-membered K-Pop group named “ENHYPEN.”

Now, Mnet has announced the second season of the hit show. I-LAND Season will search for the next hit girl group to follow ENHYPEN’s footsteps and create brilliant music and stages.

After a casting season held throughout 2021, numerous hopefuls born between 2000 and 2009 passed auditioned as dancers, vocalists, and rappers. With contestants secured, the second season of this iconic show will be lighting up fans’ TVs sometime in the first half of 2022.

Queendom 2: Newest Installment in Mnet’s “war” Survival Franchise

The second Mnet competition program that the platform has announced is the upcoming sequel to the beloved girl group survival show titled “Queendom.”

  • The most recent addition to the network “war” series, which includes Queendom Season 1, Road to Kingdom, and Kingdom: Legendary War, the new season will pit already debuted girl groups against each other in a cutthroat performance-based competition.

Queendom Line-up Breakdown

The second season of Queendom will get hosted by legendary girl group Girl Generation leader and Korean top solo vocalist Taeyeon.

Announced on the 22nd of February, the upcoming season will include female K-Pop artists/groups: Brave Girls, Cosmic Girls, Kep1er, LOONA, Hyolyn, and VIVIZ.

  • Brave Girls: Brave Girls is a four-membered girl group that debuted in 2011. After many years in the industry, the members of this group finally found well-deserved fame in 2021 after their summer track “Rollin'” went viral.
  • Cosmic Girls: Also called WJSN, Cosmic Girls is a thirteen-membered Korean-Chinese girl group under Starship Entertainment and Yuehua Entertainment.
  • Kep1er: Kep1er is a brand new nine-membered girl group that debuted to incredible success after the international success of their survival competition Girls Planet 999.
  • LOONA: LOONA is one of the top K-Pop groups in the industry. With 12 talented members, this group has drawn listeners from around the globe.
  • Hyolyn: Iconic soloist, Hyolyn is a former member of the legendary 2nd generation K-Pop girl group Sistar.
  • VIVIZ: VIVIZ is a newly-debuted trio consisting of three former Gfriend members. Their debut album, released in February 2022, was met with instant success from loyal fans.
  • Curious fans can follow the show every Thursday at 21:20 KST starting March 31st, 2022.

Survival programs like the shows mentioned above both give fans a unique viewing opportunity to support the groups they love and to peek behind the curtain of the infamous debut process. And with K-pop continuing to expand into the global market, these shows are only growing in popularity.
